Picture catch up

A few posts have been put up without much editing or picture updates.  Here are a few pictures.  the first is of Alexis taking care of Andrew when he wasn't feeling well with his ear infection.  She was such a sweet big sister telling him he would feel better soon and that medicine was yummy and not to be sad.

Numbers

27
Why on 9-10-10 was 27 a number of note you might ask?

Today is the day that Alexis counted 27 pushes and barking spiders prior to getting dressed this morning.  I am just glad that she has decided not to be against the idea of sitting on the potty to do this.  She has earned enough stickers this week alone to get one of her prizes.  For those of you who know what we went through a few weeks ago, this is DRASTIC improvement.

5
The next day's barking spider count

22
22 fire ant bites on the 22nd of September.  It's like they were trying to be comical while eating her on the playground.

2
The number of birthday parties attended in the month of September.  Emery's on the 11th and Maci's on the 18th. Also, the number of Dora episodes Alexis is allowed to watch while I make dinner or do odds and ends around the house...like update this blog.

Cubbie Bear

Last year Alexis participated in Puggles while Grant and I did the Bible study on Wednesday nights, this year she is a Cubbie Bear!
She is sooo excited to go to church on Wednesdays that she sometimes forgets that she has to go to preschool first.
The first week we had a pretty rough melt down though because when she goes to church, her first thoughts are of her friends that she sees at church, so she pretty well just flipped out when she wasn't in the same class as Zoey and Marcella.  The are all together during snack and a couple of other times though so once she saw other kids she knew and got to be in the same room with everyone she was ok.
She has done very well memorizing her little verses and the motto.  She has been less excited to memorize the pledge for some reason.  Today in the car on the way, I asked her to say her verse and she said it.  I asked her to say the motto and she said it and then knowing that she still needed help with the pledge, I started her off with "I pledge allegiance" thinking she would just repeat what I said (as she always does anyway) and instead heard from the backseat, "yeah, you do."

That night after Cubbies, Alexis told me that she said that Jesus was broken for us...then she said "Jesus was broken for Daddy and Alexis."  I said, "well what about mommy and Andrew?" Her answer "Nope, just daddy and Alexis."  Well, maybe mommy and Andrew will make the cut later.  Going to bed that evening Daddy and Alexis were talking about the people God made as I listened on the monitor.  He kept asking who God made and she named Daddy, Alexis, Cubbie Bear, Sarah, Marcella, Zoey and Isabella...still no mommy or Andrew.

Fast forward to Friday, Daddy gets a CD out of his car and puts it in at Mema's when we drop her off so she can sing for mommy.  She sings and dances to "I can only imagine" like you wouldn't believe.  We'll post a video when we can get one.

Stop Licking the Wall!...

and other phrases that become fairly normal to say once you become a parent.

We all know that there are certain things that we vow that as parents we won't do or say that our parents did that we find ourselves doing and saying and then there's this other category of things that we do and say...just the phrases that never would have crossed our minds to have those words in that order let alone those words in the same sentence.

Stop licking the wall is normally yelled during a timeout that is not being taken seriously by child committing the offense though sometimes it must be said because a child has gotten bored and found that his activity annoys parent into giving them attention.

Don't stick your french fries in your straw. If you get your fries stuck in your straw, you can't drink your juice. If you can't drink your juice, then you whine that you are thirsty. If you keep drinking your juice because you are thirsty you won't eat your other food and won't get to have your fries because your other food won't be finished. Preschool answer is to stick you fries in your straw and try to get both the juice and the fries at once.

We don't lick toes! But if the dog licks toes and preschooler is trying to be a puppy...Alexis likes to pretend to be a puppy or a duck or a seal.

Feed the barking Spiders! For those of you that don't know what barking spiders are in our house and what they eat, then it doesn't make sense and for those of you that do, well it's kind of gross, but you know the issue that we are dealing with.

Milestones

There are several milestones that we are still looking forward to, like a day without spit up and a day when both children are out of diapers.

Several milestones have past...1st smiles, trying food for the 1st time.

Alexis is now in the stage where anything can be transformed into a song.  She started out just singing songs she knew...now we are hearing many different words to those tunes.  They change everyday, sometimes every time she opens her mouth to sing.  Yesterday while picking up candy from the birthday pinata, she was singing "we like candy, we all like candy, I'm getting candy, yeah yeah yeah".

Andrew is approaching more milestones that he hasn't quite reached yet like rolling over and sitting up.  Ok, those descriptions make him sound like a dog, but those are his next two in the "what your baby does in this range of months".  He reached a milestone this weekend that no mommy ever likes...the first ear infection/first time sick.

NO FUN.

My quiet, compliant baby was transformed into a screaming beast.  I tried everything (little tummies, warm washcloth, rocking, swinging, singing, walking, pumping legs, changing diapers, feeding etc).  Finally I opened the infant Ibuprofin because by this time, if nothing else, he has to have screamed himself into having a headache of his own.  All of the Infant medicine says either if under 2 yrs or under 6 mo, consult a physician, but desperate times call for desperate measures and for a baby that sleeps through the night, screaming in ways and volumes that you have never heard before at 1:30 in the morning is one of those times.  Besides he met the weight requirement.  He calmed down enough to sleep for more than 5 min at a time as long as I was holding him.

So later in the morning, after a little bit of rest, he seems ok.  Until his 2nd morning feeding.  The fussing began and so did my marathon calling session with the pediatricians office on a Saturday.  They are only open until noon on Saturdays and only 1 doctor is there.  I was going to get us in because I knew something was not right and I didn't want to pay triple just because I had to go somewhere else to tell me the same thing.  So I called and left a message on the nurses line because I almost always hear back within the hour and they either tell me to bring my kid in or tell me what specifically to do before I bring my kid in.  Oh, but not this time.  This time, our regular pediatrician is not in the office or on call.  He always takes me seriously when I think something is not right.  He knows that I don't call unless there is a reason.  This other doctor clearly did not know this about me and clearly did not know this was not normal for my baby (even though I told the nurse this on the message and when she called me back finally). This doctor told the nurse to tell me "every baby has their colicky times. If there is no other symptom like a fever or a runny nose, I don't need to see him."  What! excuse me! I told you he was screaming for hours (gave the hour range that he screamed), everything that I tried, and that he had NEVER screamed for no reason.  So I asked the nurse if she had any suggestions or if there was anything else I could do because I really think he might have an ear infection.  She told me she would ask the doctor again and call me back (she has spoken to me before and knew I wanted an answer).  So the nurse calls me back and said that I could watch him for another hour and if other symptoms show up that they would try to work him in.  This is at 10:30, so if I watched for an hour and called at 11:30 and if they checked the message immediately and get an appointment before noon, then I could make it there 10 minutes before they closed. Hmm, this doc was not taking me seriously.  So 15 minutes later, I took his temp again.  It was just over 99.  That was good enough for me.  I called, left my message, gave him a bath (because even though I could see in his eyes he didn't feel well, he liked the water enough to enjoy his bath).  Getting splashed trumps getting screamed at any day.  Took him out, called the appointment line and they told me they were going to transfer me to the nurses voicemail in order to get an appointment if it was for same day, and I told them, no that was not good enough because I had already left a message and spoken to the nurse twice that morning.  So she put me on hold and got the nurse and then told me to go ahead and come with no appointment.
Andrew was great, he was calm most of the time in the waiting room.  He let the nurse weigh him and do what she needed to do and then we waited for the doc. (It was a busy Saturday and we were not the only people waiting.)  And when she came in, he screamed when she tried to check his ear.  It took her by surprise because he was calm until she went for the ears and then he went nuts.  This episode though was nothing like he had been overnight and she was so concerned that he seemed so uncomfortable.  We left after the lights in the waiting area were already turned off with the prescription already called in for us and a dose of tylenol squirted in his mouth and told to have her paiged if he got any worse because she was concerned that he seemed to be so uncomfortable.  She was just sooo surprised that he didn't have any other sysmptoms like a runny nose.  Both the nurse that did his initial weight check and the nurse that I had spoken with on the phone popped back by the room when the doc stepped out and I was buckling him in his seat to asked me what was wrong (not if something was wrong).  When I told them ear infection, they said "we (meaning moms) know our kids. We're glad you were persistent. You called that one." Gold star for mommy.
Andrew does not take medicine as willingly as Alexis.  I don't think he understands these new flavors yet.  But we had a much more pleasant night last night with only a little bit of a fuss and a few changes to the feeding schedule.

CATCH UP - August-1st week Sept

The below 4 posts + the post from August 1st are actually to play catch up on events that happened, the posts were drafted but never posted..for whatever reason. Needed pictures to be loaded, needed to remember or just didn't seem quite right.

New things

Andrew (A2, Spud, Little Guy) is now 14.4 lbs & 23-1/2 inches long. He likes to make all sorts of coos and happy squeals and babble. It does not sound manly. For now that's ok because at least his clothes are definitely for boys. (Thanks, David for the Star Wars gear!)

Alexis (A1, Pumpkin, Sweet Girl) is a ball of energy. She sings (favorite song changes, but a few are the ABC's, 2 little blackbirds, and Tiny Turtle). She dances...the crown and wand she has been spotted with lately is the result of her summer dance lessons. I'm pretty sure that they did one of the songs in the little mermaid because even though she likes to watch Ariel, I'm pretty sure that she picked up most of her mimicing from dance class. She wants Andrew to grow up and play.

weeds 8-25-2010

Our lawn has been taken over by them! Our whole lawn is now either dead or weeds, we got our lawn treated which did not help, they just grew back stronger and more resilient. We sprayed it ourselves and the grass died but the weeds kept growing and then we had the stretch of 100 degree days and the rest of the lawn turned brown.

In addition to the weeds in our lawn we have weeds growing in our house! Their names are Andrew and Alexis and they have both grown so much in the last few months.

Alexis got 4 gummi bears from daddy last night. Red, Yellow, Green & Orange. She said to the Red one "Stop". She said to the Green one "Go". She said to the Yellow one "Slow Down." She said to Daddy, "what does Orange say?" He replied "I don't know." Had I been quick enough at the moment I would have replied "Hazard ahead" or "Don't walk." She just said "Oh" and chomped it up. This morning when she woke up (rather grumpily I might add) we discovered that her tennis shoes no longer fit her. Since she is not allowed to wear open-toed shoes to pre-school. She wore her black Sunday Shoes. Eh, so far they have only been worn for her dance recital and maybe one or two other times, so at least she is getting another wear out of them before she outgrows these.

Andrew is nearly 3 times his birth weight - official weight from doc visit to be reported next week! I am daily putting more clothes in the does not fit box. He has a few items that he will never wear. He is now wearing size 2 diapers though it won't be long before he is in size 3's. He has slept through the night, 2 nights in a row, so hopefully I'm not jinxing it by putting it in writing. He is making more sounds.

Though he's still a fairly quiet and laid back guy
content to constantly scan the room for a familiar face at which to grin.
When he sees someone his whole face lights up
from his nearly invisible eyebrows to his chin!
He kicks and squirms until he lets some spiders bark
and he will always know to scream when the car is put in park. :)

Love & Kisses & the circus 8-15-2010

So, a while ago we were told that Alexis was kissing in school. Yes at three years old, we are already being told about her kissing. Then, a while ago she gave me a regular sweet kiss on the cheek and then said, "now we kiss like this" and cocked her head to the side and opened her mouth. I told her that we don't kiss like that. Her response was, "but Ariel does." Thank you Disney for teaching my three year old how to make out.

Then, she said to me one day "I love you so much! I'm a lover." and started laughing. She couldn't tell us where she had heard the word lover...it all came together when she and daddy were looking at a book of words and she saw paint and then said painter...she was learning that a person was called the verb + er.

A few days later we asked her and said "someone who paints is a..." and she answered "ELEPHANT!" because when we went to the circus she got to watch an elephant paint a picture. She also decided that even though she says that cats are evil that she wants a tiger.

Most of you know that we love to ask Alexis what she thinks of cats because we taught her to say they are evil. Most people think it's pretty hilarious to hear her say it too. She doesn't believe us when we tell her that Lions and Tigers are big cats. Coming back from the circus we were passing by all the items sold by the carnies and she was saying (rather sleepily) I want that and that and that and that and a tiger.

Andrew did not like the circus. The first big noise scared him and he screamed and cried and then I walked with him a little bit and he slept through the rest.

8-16-2010 Hang on, God...

Sleeping Beauty's calling me!

Alexis likes phones, to take pictures, to dial, to pretend to talk, to talk for real, you name it, she wants to do it - on a phone. Well she has a sleeping beauty play phone. I thought that she was calling Sleeping Beauty when we left the baseball game and then she told me "No, it's God." The next thing I heard was "Goodbye, Sleeping Beauty is calling now." At least we know that she talked to God first I guess.

This took place when my cousin was visiting. Here are a few pics with Joe:

Other funny conversations on or regarding the phone are as follows.
"Hello Sleeping Beauty...I'm fine. I just poopied in the potty, do you want to come see it? Not this time, ok, have a good night."

A1: Mommy, I need a phone.
Me: no you can have one when you're 14.
A1: I'm 14 now. I need your phone.
